People's stereotype of Scotland: a place where everyone only drinks pure whisky?

Good evening, friends! It's me, Leo. During my month-long journey, I visited Scotland, located in the north of the UK. I also had the privilege to visit the Johnnie Walker distillery and taste authentic Scottish whisky. However, during this whiskey exploration journey, my companion uttered a humorous yet stereotypical remark about the locals: "Do all Scottish people only drink pure whisky?" The answer is undoubtedly "no"！However, his response also intrigued me to think about that, why do such seemingly absurd stereotypes emerge?

Scots and whisky: Being a representative of Scottish spiritual culture does not necessarily imply a high degree of "purity"

First and foremost, it is absolutely certain that Scotland is indeed the birthplace of whisky and the region with the highest production and export volume of this liquor. In the video of Scotch Whisky: Explained, it has also been mentioned that Scottish whisky holds a high status in Scottish culture.(VisitScotland, 2020) However, in the video introduction, whiskey is also popular in local Scottish cocktails, so this stereotype is definitely not accurate.(VisitScotland, 2020)

Why such stereotype?

Stereotypes are often working as a cognitive tool used to bring about a latent expectation among people towards specific groups or cultures.(Schaad, 2008) Based on Schaad’s(2008) study, I can assert that the reason for the formation of this seemingly ridiculous stereotype may be related to the deep connection between Scotch whisky and Scotland. Most people may have first learned about Scottish culture through whisky. Since Scotch whisky itself has a strength that is comparable to tequila (VisitScotland, 2020), many drinkers who cannot tolerate drinking it directly may mistakenly believe that such strength is unique to the Scottish people, thus forming an extremely generalized and erroneous stereotype that all Scots can drink pure whisky.
